BMW i8 to be showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo 2014

BMW plans to introduce the hybrid sports car, the i8 at the Auto Expo 2014 scheduled to take place in the first week of February. The car made its global debut at the Frankfurt Show in 2013.

The car boasts of distinct panels at the front, sills and over the rear wheels. The headlamp cluster gets LEDs with the alternative for customers to opt for unique ‘laser’ headlights. BMW claims that these throw white light and are 70 percent more effective and bright than standard LEDs. The exterior of the vehicle also shows the C-pillar which has aerofoils and the car features gull-wing styled doors. The carmaker says that all the glass that has been used in the making has been chemically hardened. On the inside, echoing the lightweight engineering approach, the cabin gets lighter seats also designed to minimize discomfort. The interiors have been created with a futuristic layout with touch screen instrument panels.

The BMW i8 is powered by a 1.5-litre twin-turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine which in combination of an electric motor produces 362bhp of power and 570Nm of torque. The petrol mill churns out 231bhp of power and 320Nm of torque while the electric motor generates a power output of 131bhp and a torque of 250Nm. The power from the petrol engine, mated to the six-speed automatic gearbox, is transmitted to the front-wheel drive while the energy from the electric motor will be sent to the rear wheels. The car is capable to do a top whack of 250kmph (electronically limited) and the 0 to 100kmph sprint in 4.5 seconds. With low emission output levels, the vehicle is expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of 50kmpl.

The BMW i8 is portrayed as an efficient and fun to drive car. Though different from the outgoing conventional sports cars, it is expected to be pitted against the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911. The German carmaker plans to showcase the i8 at the Auto Expo in February and will also launch the car in the country some time later this year.

Was 2013, Really Bad for Auto Industry !!

Was year 2013 really bad for Auto Industry !! Answer might be positive. Indian economy was grown at almost slowest pace in last decade. Policy paralysis and political environment lead restriction of new funds from abroad and resulted in to economic sickness. Major industries faced direct impact of economic environment and auto industry was no exception.

Annual car sales in India declined for the first time in 11 years in 2013, posting a 9.59 per cent dip, as the auto industry reeled under a prolonged demand slump due to the economic slowdown.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Industry (SIAM), domestic car sales last year fell to 18,07,011 units from 19,98,703 units in the previous year.

"The decline in annual car sales that we witnessed in 2013 was the first time after 2002. The negative sentiments have deepened due to the current state of the economy," SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters here. He said high inflation, fuel prices and interest rates - which resulted in high cost of ownership - have affected sentiment.

Highlighting the prolonged slowdown, SIAM said car sales in India have been in positive territory only for three of the past 17 months - October 2012, August and September 2013.

The industry hasn't yet bottomed out, Mathur said, adding that other segments such as commercial vehicles are badly hurt due to lack of mining activities and stalled infrastructure projects. "We expect some rebound happening in commercial vehicles in the second half of the year," he said, adding that it could have some rub-off on passenger cars as well.

In the April-December 2013 period, the industry saw the launch of 22 new car models, 40 new variants and 10 model refreshes, intended to bring excitement in the market, he said. And in December, domestic car sales declined 4.52 per cent to 1,32,561 units from 1,38,835 units in the same month in 2012.

While during April-December 2013, overall automobile exports grew by 6.08 percent. Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers registered growth at 8.49 percent 16.13 percent and 4.65 percent respectively, while Commercial Vehicles declined by12.59 percent during April-December 2013 compared to the same period last year, as per SIAM Report.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki India posted a 6.4 per cent increase in domestic sales at 73,155 units as against 68,729 units in the same month of the previous year. Hyundai Motor India sales were also up 6.2 per cent at 28,320 units compared to 26,651 units in the year-ago month.

Tata Motors saw its sales crash by 41.92 per cent to 6,537 units in December from 11,257 units. Japanese car maker Honda posted a 29.27 per cent increase to 5,484 units as against 4,242.
